Why Windows Fax and Scan won't send on its own

Windows Fax and Scan is a desktop tool that talks to fax hardware. When you try to send without a modem, it asks you to set up a fax account and connect to a modem or server, and stops there. It does not include an online fax service. You can still use it for scanning from a connected scanner, but for sending, an online fax service through your browser is the practical option.

Fax modems and analog lines are also becoming harder to find, as many offices have moved to internet phone systems that do not handle fax tones reliably without special setup.

Send the fax from your browser

fax-from-computer.com recommends FaxToFax.com, which runs in Edge, Chrome, Firefox or any modern browser on Windows 11. Nothing is installed on your PC.

1. Go to FaxToFax.com and sign in with your email and the one-time code. New users go through four setup steps: email, code, choose a fax number, activate.
2. Click to start a new fax and upload your PDF. PNG and JPG files work too.
3. Add a cover page. You can save one with your logo as a reusable template.
4. Type the recipient's fax number, or several numbers for up to 50 recipients, and confirm each one.
5. Click send, or schedule the fax up to 90 days ahead.
6. Check the status: In progress, then Delivered or Failed.

Receiving faxes on Windows 11

Your account comes with a fax number, local or toll-free in the US or Canada. Faxes sent to it arrive in a private encrypted inbox in your browser, and you can turn on browser notifications in Edge or Chrome so you see an alert when one lands. Faxes are never sent to your email. To print a received fax, open it and use Ctrl+P as usual.
